75 PIVOTAL PUBLIC POLICIES: BANGLADESH BANS PLASTIC BAGS

Bangladesh became the first country to ban thin plastic bags in 2002 after they were found to have choked the nation’s drainage networks during its frequent floods. The move was emulated by nations including South Africa, Rwanda, China, Australia and Italy. In 2020, Bangladesh went further by banning single-use plastics in coastal areas and in hotels and restaurants to combat pollution.

According to a report by the UN and World Resources Institute, by July 2018 the number of countries regulating plastic bag use to some degree was 127.
