75 Pivotal Public Policies: Global Alliance For Vaccines And Immunization (GAVI)

The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) was formed in 2000 as a public-private global health partnership devoted to increasing access to immunization in poor countries.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation played a crucial role in creating and funding this alliance, bringing together the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the World Bank, the vaccine industry, developing country and donor governments.

It has been one of the most effective global public health initiatives, praised for being innovative, effective and less bureaucratic than previous multilateral efforts. GAVI supports the immunization of nearly half all children in the world—protecting more than 760m children against a range of diseases—and is estimated to have so far prevented more than 13m deaths globally.
